The Donelson-Hermitage Chamber of Commerce has just released the names of the finalists for the inaugural Rachel Awards, presented by the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority.
“The Rachel Awards will celebrate women in the Donelson-Hermitage-Old Hickory communities who represent the very tenets that made Rachel Donelson Jackson the endeared First Lady of Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage,” said Donelson-Hermitage Chamber Executive Director Cary Street.
Chamber board president Jennifer McCoy explained that three awards were named for three very distinct personality traits of Rachel Jackson. “We know that she was a strong woman but not self-aggrandizing; she was a cultivator of the arts, education, and literally her garden; she was self-educated and a survivor. Who better to honor than women with these same attributes.”
Winners will receive a scholarship to Argosy University to complete Bachelor, Master’s or Doctorate programs. Dr. Roger Widmer, president of Argosy University said that he is happy to offer this opportunity to these deserving women. “Rachel Jackson understood the value of an education. We at Argosy University want to make sure that these women have the opportunity to continue theirs, should they wish.”
Finalists will be recognized and the winner in each category announced at a gala event held on Friday, August 11, at Andrew Jackson’s Hermit- age beginning at 7 p.m. Guests will be treated to some of Andrew and Rachel Jack-son’s favorite foods; wine, beer, and a specialty drink will also be offered. After the cocktail hour, guests will move into the newly renovated theatre for the awards presentation, emceed by award-winning journalist and host, Terri Merryman, and entertainment provided by local artists.
Tickets are $85 a person or $150 a couple and can be purchased on line by visiting the Donelson-Hermitage Chamber website at www.donelsonhermitagechamber.com or by calling the Chamber office at 615-883-7896.
